From Phoenix, with or without the drive

The Verde Canyon Railroad sits about two hours north of Phoenix, and there are exactly two sensible ways to do it from the Valley: drive yourself to Clarkdale, or let a pickup day tour turn the whole thing into a no-driving day out. Here is how the two compare.

Driving yourself

Take I-17 north to AZ-260 toward Cottonwood; the depot at 300 N Broadway, Clarkdale has free parking. Leave Phoenix by 10 AM for the 1:00 PM departure and you have margin for the hour-early arrival the railroad recommends. The train itself is about 4 hours, so you are back in Phoenix around 8 PM. Buy the $139 fare direct or the Adventure package at about $186 with the champagne toast, appetizers, lunch voucher and free 24-hour cancellation.

The pickup day tours

Two Viator listings bundle hotel pickup with the day. The Jerome & Clarkdale day tour from Phoenix (about $255, full day) adds a guided visit to the Jerome ghost town and historic Clarkdale, with the railroad seat as an add-on option. The Rail Day Adventure from Scottsdale or Phoenix (about $350, 12 hours) is the do-it-all version: first-class train ticket included, plus Montezuma Castle and the Tuzigoot pueblo ruins on the same day, with snacks, lunch and water on board. Against roughly $60 to 80 of fuel and five hours of your own driving, the premium buys a guide and a nap on the ride home.

Worth knowing

Seats on the train are assigned at booking on every ticket - book the whole party in one order. Summer departures run in the afternoon heat, but the indoor half of every seat pair is air-conditioned. And if the Grand Canyon is also on the Phoenix itinerary, note there is no train there from Phoenix either; the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams is the rail option, two and a half hours north.
